THE SCOOP

The Fun

  • Nice size

  • Good capacity

The Frustration

  • No back padding

The Specs

Capacity: Excellent

11.5"W x 14"H

Based on dimensions alone, this would seem to be one of the smallest backpacks we reviewed. But while some packs narrow toward the top, the Crocodile Creek pretty much keeps the same width from top to bottom. A folder, a small notebook, and a couple books fit inside easily.

Organization: Very Good

The main opening of this bag doesn't have any additional storage compartments. But the pack has a sizable front pocket with six additional compartments inside, including three slots for pens or pencils and a smaller pocket that zips closed. The Crocodile Creek also includes a side water bottle pocket.

Comfort & Fit

Comfort: Okay

This pack had minimal padding on the shoulder straps and no padding on the back. The sizable front pocket helps distribute weight but there's no waist belt to take any of that weight off little backs and shoulders.

Fit: Excellent

This backpack worked well across the entire 42" to 48" spectrum. It's size was not overwhelming for our smaller testers, and it's generous width kept it usable for our taller testers.

Quality: Good

The pack material is durable and nicely lined though the zipper didn't work quite as smoothly as we'd like.

Conclusion

A fully serviceable (and adorable) bag for our littlest testers. We think it works best for the pre-K and possibly Kindergarten age group. While the Crocodile Creek has sufficient carrying capacity to fit early grade school materials, the lack of back padding means it's not a great bet for a child who might use it to carry anything big or sharp, including books.
